Which plank makes you, you?
The Ship of Theseus and the paradox of becoming

Ancient Greek philosophy is full of stories that help us examine life. Ship of Theseus is one such tale that has travelled across centuries simply because it asks one very human question.
Theseus, the legendary founder of Athens, is most famous for slaying the Minotaur (a half-man, half-bull creature) that lived at the centre of the Labyrinth. He eventually escaped by boarding a wooden ship to Delos. The Athenians, honouring his bravery, preserved that ship for generations.
But ships age. Wood rots. Planks loosen.
So the people of Athens did what caretakers do: they replaced the parts, one by one. A new timber here. A fresh board there.
Until one day, someone asked a question that philosophers have been wrestling with ever since:
“If every single part of the ship has been replaced over time, is it still the same ship?”
Replace ‘ship’ with ‘person’, and suddenly we’re not talking about ancient Athens anymore. We’re talking about you. We’re talking about me. We’re talking about everyone trying to figure out who they are while simultaneously becoming someone new.
Because the truth is, you’re replacing your planks all the time.
The cells in your body regenerate. Your beliefs shift. Your priorities change. The things that used to matter feel distant. The person you were certain you’d become feels like a stranger. You look at photos from five years ago and think, “Who even was that?”
And yet, there’s something that feels continuous. Something that makes you recognize yourself in those old photos even when everything else has changed. Something that says, “Yes, that was me. And this is me now. Somehow both are true.”
So the question becomes: Which plank makes you, you?
