This artwork was born from a life lesson once shared with us: “Rising early makes the road short.” – Bongekile Felicia Motsa from the Kingdom of Eswatini. Bongekile shared this lesson while reflecting on the discipline her mother practiced: waking before sunrise, preparing for the day long before the world stirred. For her, ‘rising early’ wasn’t just about time. It was about intention. About meeting the road before it met you.
In our pursuit of translating intangible wisdom into tangible artefacts, we asked ourselves: What would this lesson look like if it had a body? What colours would it wear? Where would it place its hands?
We partnered with the wonderful artist Janhavi Sharma, who translated this wisdom into form, weaving in her own reflections as she brought the story to life.
That’s the beautiful thing about visual wisdom. Two people can look at the same image and walk away with completely different lessons. And neither of them is wrong. The artwork holds the original story but it also makes room for yours.
