There is a human in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a beggar but he does not beg.
So what does he do?
Instead of begging, he shares book reviews. He collects books, reads them, and shares reviews to people passing by on the street. If you like the review, he will try to sell you the book. This is how he makes a living.
His name is Philani Dladla.
Philan's love for books started when he was 11 years old. A kind man named Joseph Castyline gave him his first book and promised more if he read it. When Joseph passed away, he left Philani his collection of nearly 500 books.
Despite his early love for reading, Philani had a tough time growing up. He got into trouble and was expelled from school. In 2008, his mother sent him to Johannesburg for a fresh start. But soon, he became addicted to drugs and ended up homeless, living under the Nelson Mandela Bridge.
Even while living on the streets, Philani kept reading and started sharing book reviews. He set up a book stall near Wits University, and people began donating books for him to sell. His book reviews became popular, and in 2013, a video about him went viral; that got him the nickname “The Pavement Bookworm.”
Since then, Philani has given TEDx talks, written a book about his life, started book clubs for kids, and also became a motivational speaker. His story shows how books and determination can change lives.
We’re always inspired by Philani’s journey and how books transformed his life. It’s a powerful reminder of the incredible impact that reading can have. Do you believe in the magic of books too?
